This week’s Smackdown began with a video package about the Charlotte Flair match with Ronda Rousey at Survivor Series with Flair attacking Rousey with a kendo stick and steel chair when she was frustrated that she couldn’t put Rousey away.
There was a shot of the crowd in Los Angeles making a lot of noise as the show began.
The lovely Charlotte Flair made her entrance with a confident look on her face. She had on her robe and her ring gear, so she will be in a match after the promo. It’s like there’s a script or something! I’ll stop that. Sorry.
The announce team of Tom Phillips, Corey Graves and Byron Saxton were shown on screen welcoming us to the show.
Let’s Hear From Charlotte Flair
Flair was greeted with “woo” chants. Flair said that this past Sunday, she beat up the so-called baddest woman on the planet and she is damn proud of it. Flair asked Ronda if she is walking a little slower and if she’s looking for an apology, but Flair said that’s not coming because she enjoyed every second of beating her ass. Flair said that this Sunday was for Smackdown, it was for her girls in that locker room and it was for The Champ…as fans chanted “Becky” for her.
Flair said that she has spent half her career fighting with Becky Lynch and this past Sunday, she fought for Becky. Flair said that Lynch told her to give Ronda the beating that Becky was going to give her. Flair said that was her mission and then said mission accomplished. Flair said that Ronda Rousey bowed down to the queen.
Paige’s music hit as the Smackdown General Manager walked down to the ring. Paige said you didn’t have to apologize for what she did to Ronda when Paige said that they enjoyed what Charlotte did to Ronda. Paige said that Ronda claimed she would find Charlotte and finish what she started. Paige got in the ring. Flair said that if Ronda sticks her nose in her business again then Flair is going to stomp on a chair over and over. Flair said that nobody is going to stop her.
Paige said that Flair snapped and told her that she put her hands on five WWE referees. Flair said that they were in the way. Paige told Flair that she leaves her no choice, as Smackdown Live General Manager, she will fine Flair $100,000 for her actions. Flair didn’t seem happy about that. Here come The IIconics with the interruption.
The duo of Peyton Royce and Billie Kay had microphones in their hands. Royce acted like she was in some sort of trance and Kay said that it was like Royce was like a female Frankenstein like Flair on Sunday. Royce said that she was psychotic. Kay said that they know they are Paige’s favorites as the IIconics went into the ring. The IIconics kept trash talking as Flair wondered which one of them would be the next Ronda Rousey, so Flair challenged them to a match and Flair’s music hit to set up a match after the break.
Analysis: It was a good promo from Flair to start the show as she showed no remorse for what she did to Rousey at Survivor Series. I think they could have had her better explain why she would want to fight for Becky Lynch and maybe say that even though they had issues recently, she respects Becky. At least if she said that it would tie up loose ends in the storyline. Also, it looks like Flair is remaining a face even though she snapped at Survivor Series and acted like a heel. Paige fining Charlotte money fits the story because Charlotte did beat up referees. Obviously, she’s not really paying a dime. I know I don’t have to explain that, but sometimes I need to explain things better on here.
The bell rang to begin the match.
Charlotte Flair vs. Billie Kay (w/Peyton Royce)
Flair was aggressive early on as she whipped Kay into the turnbuckle and slapped on a headlock. Flair hit Kay with a few knee drops to the face. Kay went for a kick, Flair caught the foot and Kay went to the floor to avoid a submission attempt. Flair left the ring and hit Kay with a forearm. Royce provided a distraction, so Kay hit Flair with a boot to the face. Back in the ring, Kay was in control with punches. Flair got a rollup cover and Kay kicked Flair into the middle turnbuckle. Royce grabbed Flair’s hair for a cheap shot. Kay with another boot to the face and Flair kicked out at two. Flair picked up Kay and hit a fallaway slam. Flair hit the Natural Selection on Kay and covered for the pinfall win after about three minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Charlotte Flair
Analysis: *1/2 Easy win for Flair as expected in a match like that. Kay got in a bit of offense, but it’s not like it was believable that Kay was going to win.
Flair grabbed the microphone. She said that only one of them is Ronda Rousey. Flair challenged Peyton Royce to a fight. The fans seemed to approve of the idea. Kay encouraged Royce to do it. Flair had a big smile on her face showing a lot of confidence. Royce claimed she wasn’t ready yet. The show went to break there.
Analysis: They are really giving Charlotte a lot of screen time this week. I don’t mind it. She’s a great performer.
The match was joined in progress.
Charlotte Flair vs. Peyton Royce (w/Billie Kay)
Royce was in control with a kick to the face that got her a two count. Royce went for a knee, Flair avoided it and got a rollup. Royce came back with a clothesline that got a two count. Royce with a chinlock like move. Flair went up against the ropes, Kay grabbed Flair and then Flair came back with a kick to Royce. Flair wanted a slam, so Kay went into the ring to attack Flair for the DQ finish. The match went about two minutes.
Winner by disqualification: Charlotte Flair
Analysis: 1/2* It was not much of a match due to the DQ finish.
Post match, the IIconics attacked Flair in the ring with kicks. They dumped Flair out of the ring. Royce and Kay wanted a chair from ringside, but the guy at ringside wouldn’t give the chair to them. Charlotte got back into it with a running Spear on both women on the floor. Flair whipped the heads of both women into the announce table at ringside. Flair slammed their heads into the table individually at first and then at the same time. Flair whipped Kay into the barricade followed by a running knee. Flair whipped Royce back first into the steel steps. Flair grabbed Kay and tossed her over the announce table at ringside. Flair tossed Royce over the announce table as well. Flair posed on the announce table and yelled “Bow Down” since she is the queen.
Analysis: That was a thorough ass kicking from Flair. She destroyed The IIconics easily, which isn’t a surprise because Peyton and Billie are barely on TV these days. Like I noted earlier, it’s all about putting Flair over to make her look strong even when she’s not holding the title. If WWE does a rematch with her and Rousey at Royal Rumble (not sure about that, but just saying if they do it) then it’s important to build Charlotte up for that showdown. Flair was on the show for the first 28 minutes. That’s 1/4 of the broadcast. She did a good job the entire time.
There was a shot of Rey Mysterio in the backstage area. Mysterio said that these eyes have seen a lot in his lifetime, both the good and the bad of stars from the past and present. Mysterio talked about how Randy Orton is more sadistic than he’s ever been. Mysterio said he didn’t come back to WWE just to be one of The Viper’s victims. Mysterio said that Orton is at the top of his game, but so is Mysterio and we’ll see that later. Later on Smackdown is Mysterio vs. Orton.
The announcers were shown on their table again reorganizing after that chaotic post match segment.
A replay aired of Daniel Bryan beating AJ Styles for the WWE Title last week thanks to a low blow that the referee never saw and a running knee to the face. Bryan is on Smackdown later.
The Miz was shown backstage with his Marine 6 DVD that he signed for some dude and Miz was walking because he’s up next.
Miz TV with Shane McMahon
The Miz was in the ring to host Shane McMahon. He had on his ring gear on under his red leather entrance jacket, so I guess he’s going to be put into a match. The fans greeted Miz with a “Miz is awesome” chant. Miz said it’s good to be home…even though he moved from LA to Austin, Texas earlier this year.
Miz said it was an honor to fight alongside tonight’s guest because his love of Smackdown is an inspiration for anybody that has ever stepped foot in a WWE ring. Miz introduced him as the BEST IN THE WORLD…Shane McMahon.
Shane McMahon, the Commissioner of Smackdown, had a slow walk down to the ring. The Miz did some ridiculous dancing to Shane’s theme song. Shane slowly got into the ring and they sat down in chairs.
Miz put over Shane for his performance at Survivor Series and said it was transcendent. Miz likes sucking up to him. Miz said “I am a Shane stan” meaning he’s a fan. Miz said it was only fitting that Shane was the last man standing for Smackdown Live just like at the World Cup. Miz put over all the things that Shane did as he continued his sucking up. Shane talked about putting Strowman through the table and the Coast to Coast on Ziggler, but he didn’t remember much after the Strowman clothesline. Miz said he said “we” because he’s the one that motivates while adding that the Best in the World needs motivation sometimes. Shane wondered if Miz had a question.
Miz pointed out that since Shane is 1/3 of the Best in the World and Miz is 2/3 of the Best in the World, Miz had a question for him. Miz wondered if Shane would become a tag team with him with Miz suggesting they use the Best Team in the World name. Miz said he saw a fighter and champion at Survivor Series. Saxton: “What a suck up!” Shane said he didn’t know about it and Miz thought Shane would be excited about it. Miz said if Shane was as much of a McMahon as he thinks he is, Shane would team up with him against some competition right here, right now.
Analysis: Weak segment that was all about Miz sucking up to Shane. They didn’t address Raw destroying Smackdown at Survivor Series even though Shane tweeted about it and it was promoted for the show. It just shows how poor the planning was for Survivor Series going into it by having such a weak follow up to it.
Two wrestlers entered: Wayne and Dane Bryant aka The Bryant Brothers. They were brothers where one of them was white and one of them is black. The Miz gave them a big introduction as these two wrestlers that were really small made their way into the ring.
The Miz was in his wrestling gear while Shane slowly moved around in his jeans and he had a leather jacket.
The Miz and Shane McMahon vs. The Bryant Brothers (Wayne and Dane)
Miz dominated Wayne with a running kick and a DDT. Miz wanted Shane to tag in, but Shane told Miz to do it because Shane was hurting. Miz went over to Dane and Dane did an inside cradle on Miz for the pinfall win after two minutes.
Winners by pinfall: The Bryant Brothers
Analysis: 1/4* Match of the year! Not exactly. It was a shocking upset with two no-name guys beating The Miz and Shane although Shane had nothing to do with the match.
After the match, Miz was shocked about what happened. The Bryant Brothers left triumphantly. The crowd was happy about it because it was a huge upset where Miz was humiliated.
Analysis: I’m not sure where the angle is going other than Miz trying to suck up to Shane. There have been rumors of Shane turning heel, but there was no sign of that here. Maybe Shane will stay face and Miz will become his rival going all the way to a WrestleMania. I don’t know right now.
The announcers talked about the Starrcade live event this Saturday night in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sunday night on WWE Network, there’s a 1-hour special of Starrcade at 8pmET/5pmPT.
The New Day were shown walking backstage dressed as pilgrims. The Gobbledy Gooker showed up. It was R-Truth. New Day walked towards the ring for their match. Xavier Woods had a 6-1 shirt onto represent Smackdown’s one win at Survivor Series that WWE chose to ignore because it was on the Kickoff Show.
The New Day trio of Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods and Big E were in the ring. There was food in the ring and all around the ring for Thanksgiving. Woods said “6-1” just like it says on his shirt.
Kingston said that they are rapidly approaching one of their family holidays as they started a “Turkey Day” chant for Thanksgiving. Woods said that they are participating in the first ever “Thanksgiving Feast Fight.” Big E said just “you people” they like to take the time to share what they are thankful as Woods said “6-1” and some fans chanted “6-1” for it. Kingston said he’s thankful for their tag team victory at Survivor Series, which led to cheers. Kingston said that they were the one in 6-1, but for some reason their victory didn’t count in the total. Woods is thankful for his 2 terabyte hard drive so he doesn’t have to delete Spider-man in order to download Red Dead 2. Big E said that he’s thankful for “these big, juicy, succulent breasts that we have been blessed with on this day.” Kingston asked him what the hell, so Big E said he meant the turkey breasts. Big E started licking the turkey as Sheamus and Cesaro made their entrance.
The Bar duo of Sheamus and Cesaro made their entrance as the Smackdown Tag Team Champions. They were joined by Big Show. Cesaro complained about being a part of this match while accusing New Day about coming up this idea. Kingston said that they actually won their Survivor Series matches unlike some people (Sheamus and Cesaro). Sheamus wondered how anybody could prepare for spontaneous urination. Sheamus said they’ll feel better by going to the ring to kick their ass.
Analysis: The promos were fine although they weren’t necessary. At least they got to mention Smackdown won a match at Survivor Series, which was ignored on Raw.
Thanksgiving Feast Fight: The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) vs. Sheamus, Cesaro and Big Show
The ring was surrounded by food on tables. Big Show started with Woods with a hard chop to the chest. Cesaro hit a running elbow drop on Woods. Sheamus slapped on an armbar on Woods, who broke free and Sheamus kicked Woods down to the mat. Cesaro with a running low dropkick on Woods. Cesaro picked up Woods, who flipped around and Cesaro bumped onto his chest. That was impressive. Kingston tagged in with a flying chop off the top, plus a dropkick and a clothesline. Kingston hit the boom drop leg drop. Sheamus avoided Trouble in Paradise, Kingston got to the top rope again and hit a cross body block for two as Cesaro made the save. Cesaro dumped Woods out of the ring. Big E was in the ring and he knocked Cesaro down with a shoulder tackle. Big E knocked Big Show off the apron and Show went crashing through a table full of food. Sheamus with a Brogue Kick on Big E to knock him out of the ring. Sheamus brought a turkey into the ring, Kingston avoided it and Woods kicked Sheamus. Kingston up top and jumped off the top with a turkey to the head of Sheamus. Big E tagged in, he put a turkey on his hand and Big E ran into Sheamus with a turkey to the head for the win. Yeah that’s right…a turkey to the head. It went about seven minutes.
Winners by pinfall: The New Day
Analysis: **1/4 It was okay for what it was supposed to be as a regular tag team match that turned into a comedy match. I’ve reviewed thousands of matches and don’t recall a match ending with a turkey to the head before, so that’s unique!
After the match, Cesaro tried to attack with some food, but New Day avoided it and New Day threw a bunch of different food at Cesaro’s face. Cesaro bumped into the ring as the New Day’s music hit as the winners of the match and the post match attack. The New Day guys slipped on the food outside the ring.
Analysis: More comedy. I was mildly entertained by it.
Randy Orton was shown backstage holding a Rey Mysterio mask and said that this mask means nothing to him. Orton said that the mask deserves to be destroyed just like the man that wears it. Orton said that when Mysterio came back, people said people were excited. Orton said when he’s done with Mysterio, we’ll be disappointed all because of three letters and those are…R…K…O.
Asuka and Naomi were shown backstage because they are up next.
A clip aired from Evolution from three weeks ago when Mandy Rose eliminated best friend Sonya Deville in the battle royal.
Mandy and Sonya were in the ring for a match, so no televised entrance for them. It was one year after their WWE main roster debut as Absolution with Paige last year. Asuka entered first for her team. Naomi was up next.
Asuka and Naomi vs. Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville
The match began with Rose and Naomi with Phillips noting that we’ll see if Rose and Deville can trust eachother, so they’re in a trust issues storyline. Naomi sent both heels to the apron, Asuka joined her in the ring and they each hit a double hip attack to knock the heels to the floor. They barely connected with those moves, but they were sold like they did connect.
The heels were in control as they had Naomi isolated in the corner with Rose hitting a jumping knee strike on Naomi while Deville was holding Naomi. Deville tried to keep Naomi in their corner, but Asuka hit a jumping kick to the back of the head. Asuka got the hot tag against Rose with Asuka hitting a dropkick. Rose blocked a suplex attempt, Asuka hit a knee to the face and a German Suplex. Asuka hit a Shining Wizard knee to the face of Rose for a two. Rose ran the ropes, Deville tagged herself in, Rose went for a knee, Asuka moved, leading to Deville and Rose saying they were sorry because Rose almost hit her. Asuka hit a jumping kick on Deville, Naomi took out Rose and Asuka slapped on the Asuka Lock on Deville for the submission win after about six minutes.
Winners by submission: Asuka and Naomi
Analysis: ** It was a predictable win for the Asuka team. The story was about Rose and Deville having issues, which led to Asuka capitalizing on that to have a win. This could lead to the split of Rose and Deville, which is okay with me because it’s been a year with them together where they haven’t done that much. Perhaps if there is a split, it will be better than their careers. Asuka has had nothing interesting to do on Smackdown for about six months. She is being wasted.
A clip aired of Rey Mysterio beating Randy Orton in the WWE World Cup tournament three weeks ago and after the match, Orton attacked Mysterio. Two weeks ago, Mysterio beat Andrade Almas and after the match, Orton hit a RKO out of nowhere. Orton vs. Mysterio is later.
The WWE Champion Daniel Bryan is up next.
The video package aired for Lars Sullivan’s main roster debut. They aired the same video at Survivor Series and Raw. There’s no indication of what show he will be on. Raw has more big guys that are already heels, so I think Smackdown makes more sense.
Let’s Hear From Daniel Bryan
Daniel Bryan, the new WWE Champion, made his entrance without doing any “YES” chants while the crowd didn’t know how to react to him. Bryan was dressed in street clothes including a sweater and jeans. Bryan will defend the WWE Championship against AJ Styles at TLC on December 16. Bryan entered the ring for a promo.
Bryan said that he didn’t expect these people to understand this. Bryan said that this explanation isn’t for them, it’s for you. Bryan said that he committed an act for betrayal, that act of betrayal wasn’t last Tuesday, it was three years ago when Daniel Bryan stood in front of all these people when he announced his retirement. Bryan’s betrayal occurred when he gave up on his dreams. He said that the difference Daniel Bryan and these people is that he does not accept failure. He claimed that Daniel Bryan learned his lesson, he decided to fight, he went all across the country to see doctors, then he spent three hours every single day inside of a hyperbaric chamber. Inside that cold, dark, enclosed chamber with 100% oxygen, it was meant to speed up the healing process, but it did way more than that. He claimed it allowed Daniel Bryan the silence and isolation to meditate on his new mantra: “Fight for your dream and your dreams will fight for you.” And it worked. How else would you explain the miracle that against all odds, Daniel Bryan returned to the ring? And when he did, he received the loudest “yes” chants he had ever heard and it was a great moment. He added that for these people, it was just a moment. He said they weren’t there for the struggles, the pain, dealing with the psychiatrists and the therapists telling him to move on.
Bryan said that the ones that moved on were these people and you can hear it as these “idiots” chant for AJ Styles. Bryan said “fickle” repeatedly. Bryan said that you heard as the “yes” chants drew quieter every single week and then Bryan, for whatever reason, he stopped fighting. Bryan said that when the referee was down, you didn’t allow Daniel Bryan to give up on his dreams because his dreams took over and their dreams did what they were programmed to do when Daniel’s dreams “kicked AJ Styles in the balls.” He said it just like that.
Bryan said that Daniel Bryan’s dreams made him realize that he didn’t need these people for anything. His dreams told him that he didn’t need to beat Brock Lesnar to win, he won by allowing Lesnar to beat the weakness out of him and there would be a new emergence after that match. Bryan said there has been that new emergence. Bryan claimed that the old Daniel Bryan that these people loved…“that Daniel Bryan is dead. The Yes Movement is dead.” The fans booed. Bryan added that’s all that is left is you…the new Daniel Bryan…the WWE Champion! Bryan: “And the only thing that matters, is that you never, ever give up your dream, ever, ever again!” Bryan held up the WWE Title as the promo ended.
Bryan went over to the ring announcer Greg Hamilton. Bryan stood on the announce table as Hamilton said: “Ladies and gentlemen, here is your WWE Champion…the NEW Daniel Bryan!” Bryan posed with the title on the announce table as his music played.
Analysis: That was a great promo to tell us why Bryan is a heel now. Bryan did the traditional heel turn thing where he blamed the fans for his actions while calling them idiots for supporting his rival AJ Styles. The transformation to the “new” Daniel Bryan is officially complete because he realized that what he was doing before wasn’t working and now he is a new man. I’m all for the heel version of Bryan because he’s an incredible all-around performer. That was the kind of promo that he couldn’t do at a high level when he first got to WWE, but he has developed as a talker and did a great job in that monologue. I am surprised there was no sign of AJ Styles for an attack or a retort, but they have three more Smackdowns to go until TLC, so there’s plenty of time for that.
Orton vs. Mysterio is next.
The announcers talked about the fires in California and said we can donate by going to SupportLAFD.org now.
There was a WWEShop advertisement for Black Friday this week with R-Truth and Carmella shilling merchandise.
Rey Mysterio made his entrance to a good pop as usual. The announcers were pushing this as a huge match and the first time on Smackdown in about 12 years. They had a memorable feud in 2006. Randy Orton was up last. He was off the Survivor Series card this year.
Rey Mysterio vs. Randy Orton
Mysterio with a kick to the head and he wanted a 619, but Orton got out of the way. Mysterio managed to hit a running seated senton off the apron onto Mysterio on the floor. Mysterio up top, Orton tripped him up and Orton went after the mask of Mysterio, but Rey fought him off. They went to break.
Orton was in control as he whipped Mysterio into the ropes leading to a clothesline. Orto grabbed the mask of Mysterio and ripped apart one of the eye holes of the mask. Mysterio fought it off, he went for a dropkick off the middle rope, Orton moved and Mysterio hit the mat hard. Mysterio managed to put down Orton with another kick. Mysterio to the apron, he jumped off with a seated senton and Mysterio followed with a springboard bulldog. Mysterio up top with a leg drop for a two count. Mysterio set up for a 619, but Orton caught the legs of Mysterio, so Mysterio hit another kick to the head and put Orton against the ropes. Mysterio connected with a 619 on his third attempt. Dropkick by Mysterio knocked down Orton outside the ring. Mysterio went for his sliding attack under the bottom rope and went right into a RKO! That was sweet. Mysterio sold it like he was knocked out on the floor. Orton rolled Mysterio back in the ring, Orton picked up Mysterio and hit another RKO in the middle of the ring for the pinfall win after nine minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Randy Orton
Analysis: **3/4 It was a solid match between two guys that have good chemistry together. Orton going after the mask helped the story with Mysterio trying to come back against him. The finish was creative and looked cool with Orton hitting the RKO on the floor to completely stop Rey’s momentum and win the match. The booking of Orton has been so inconsistent because he’ll win matches like this or against guys like Jeff Hardy, but then they don’t put him on the Survivor Series team.
After the match was over, Orton grabbed a steel chair and went after Mysterio on the floor. Orton put the chair around Mysterio’s face and whipped him into the steel ring post. The Mysterio mask was off, so Orton grabbed it and left with it. Mysterio was down with a chair around his head while the referee Mike Chioda checked on him. A towel was put on Mysterio’s head as EMTs checked on Rey. There was no shot of Rey’s face without the mask. Orton held up the mask as if it was a souvenir and that was how Smackdown ended.
Analysis: It was a good ending to put over the idea that this is a personal feud with Orton wanting to humiliate Mysterio. There will likely be more matches between them.
If you want to see Rey without the mask, just search for it because he wrestled that way in WCW for years. I realize there’s a whole generation of fans that may not even know about it because it was 18 years ago. During his WWE career, he never appeared without a mask although guys like Chris Jericho did unmask him in a match. They just didn’t show his face after.
Three Stars of the Show
1. Daniel Bryan
2. Charlotte Flair
3. (tie) Randy Orton
3. (tie) Rey Mysterio
4.5 out of 10
Last week: 7.5
2018 Average: 6.56
Last 5 Weeks: 7.5, 8, 5, 7.5, 5
2018 High: 8.5 (July 31)
2018 Low: 4.5 (January 2, January 9, November 20)
I give this week’s Smackdown a 4.5 out of 10.
This was a weak show. Instead of addressing the big story from Survivor Series with Smackdown going 0-6 on the main show, they completely ignored it. Shane McMahon teased on Twitter and in the preview of the show they teased something happening, but then it was nothing except a joke tag team match with Shane. It was another example of poor storytelling from WWE where they had some plan going into the show, then that plan changed and it led to a boring night of television. This show should have been about the people running Smackdown (Shane and Paige) being mad that they got destroyed at Survivor Series. Instead, it was barely addressed.
If you watch Raw and Smackdown for good in-ring action, this might have been the worst week of the year for that. They just didn’t have anything memorable on either show.
I thought the highlights of the show were Daniel Bryan’s promo and most of what Charlotte did. The main event was okay. Other than that, I was bored by most of Smackdown.
I gave Raw a 4 and Smackdown a 4.5 out of 10. I liked Survivor Series, which I gave a 7, but the follow up to it was poor.
