WWE News: Big Cass Has Been Released

It was announced on Tuesday afternoon that Big Cass has been released by WWE.

On it says this: “WWE has come to terms on the release of William Morrissey (Big Cass).”

They didn’t even use the “future endeavors” line for him.

Cass lost to Daniel Bryan at Money in the Bank on Sunday. It was the second straight pay-per-view match against Bryan where Cass tapped out clean. Was Cass mad about the booking? Is that why he got released? We don’t know.

Last month, Big Cass had heat with management for going off script by attacking a little person during a segment on Smackdown. Apparently, Cass was told to not punch the man on the ground, but Cass did it anyway and management was mad about it. It’s a big no-no to go against what management tells you to do in WWE.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, Vince McMahon called a meeting at Smackdown TV today and fired Cass.

Cass is 30 years old and signed with WWE in 2011. He spent most of his time in NXT teaming with Enzo Amore. When they got called up to the main roster, they were a popular team, but they didn’t win the Tag Team Titles on the main roster. In the summer of 2017, Cass turned heel on his partner Enzo and got a solid singles push. That push stopped on the Raw after SummerSlam 2017 when Cass tore his ACL and was out for about eight months of action. Cass returned to Smackdown in April after the Superstar Shakeup, got into a feud with Daniel Bryan and now he’s gone.

The weird thing about this is that the Big Cass/Enzo breakup storyline happened exactly one year ago today.

TJR Thoughts: It feels weird for a guy to get fired in the afternoon during a TV taping. I wonder if this was a case of Cass asking to be released or maybe WWE wasn’t happy with his matches with Daniel Bryan. I thought the Money in the Bank match with Cass and Bryan was solid. Not great, but it was fine. I’m not sure if there is more to the story.

Cass signed with WWE seven years ago in his early 20s. At some point, WWE must have felt like if he can’t elevate his game to the next level on the main roster then they should probably let him go. Maybe he’ll be back one day? I don’t know. Good luck to him in the future.

This is a developing story and I’ll update it when more news becomes available during the day.
