Report: Becky Lynch vs. Ronda Rousey Match Likely to Headline WWE WrestleMania 35
The heavily advertised first time ever matchup between Smackdown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch and Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey was all set to take place this Sunday at Survivor Series. However, Lynch sustained a “broken face” (as they called it on Smackdown) and a severe concussion during a wild brawl on Raw thanks to a punch from Nia Jax that led to Lynch having really bad bruising around the eye that Lynch was happy to show on Smackdown. We covered it all here in this news post and then in the Smackdown review.
This week’s Smackdown also led to the announcement of Charlotte Flair replacing Lynch in the match against Rousey at Survivor Series. Lynch told Flair to beat Rousey the way Lynch was going to beat her, so now we will see Rousey vs. Flair for the first time ever this Sunday.
What about Lynch vs. Rousey? In my opinion, that should be saved until WrestleMania and apparently, that’s the WWE plan too.
It is being reported by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that “right now the plan is for Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch to headline WrestleMania.” Following Lynch’s injury on Raw, it was obvious that Lynch vs. Rousey was the most anticipated match at Survivor Series. It was decided on Tuesday that Vince McMahon and Ronda Rousey both agreed that the best plan would be to do Lynch vs. Rousey at WrestleMania 35 on April 7, 2019.
It was also noted by Meltzer in the Observer that there was no interaction between Rousey and Flair during the Raw brawl featuring the women because of the idea that WWE had to put them in a match possibly at WrestleMania next year. That plan is out the window now and the company is focusing on Lynch vs. Rousey at WrestleMania. Perhaps WWE could opt for a triple threat with the three women, but based on Meltzer’s report, it appears to be Lynch vs. Rousey.
What we don’t know right now is how do we get to Lynch vs. Rousey at WrestleMania? Right now both women are holding the Women’s Titles on their respective brands. What could happen is WWE may opt to strip Lynch of her title due to injury, then Lynch fails to win it back, so Lynch wins the Royal Rumble and challenges “Ronnie” Rousey at WrestleMania. They could also have Rousey lose her title perhaps through some cheap route like Nia Jax cheating to beat her, which could lead to Rousey winning the Rumble and challenging Lynch. If I had to guess, I think Lynch losing her title and then winning the Royal Rumble is the more likely scenario because I believe WWE will want Rousey to be undefeated going into WrestleMania as the champion.
There’s still a lot of time to go between now and WrestleMania, so remember that plans can always change. No more injuries, please.
Meanwhile, in case you missed it, Rousey and Lynch have kept the feud going with a number of Instagram posts and tweets where they have taken personal shots at eachother. Lynch even adjusted her Twitter handle and location to trash talk “Ronnie” Rousey even more.
I’ll end this post with their latest trash talk (plus Lynch responding to Nia Jax) and say that if you are on social media, you need to be following both women because it’s very entertaining.
When you’re babbling on about avocados, I’m main-eventing my show AND your show. Did you hear that last night, Ronda? That’s the sound they make when The Man comes around. pic.twitter.com/5JGZJIUhDW

You gave me your best sucker punch, but I got back up to destroy your whole roster. They won’t let me fight, but I’ll get back up from that too. It’s what I do. So enjoy your one free shot, because as bad as my memory is now, I haven’t forgotten you, bitch. https://t.co/4dZW4hCmaf

Ronnie, TL/DR. When I got my face broke I got up, owned you THEN showed up the next day looking to fight some more. When you got your face broke you hid for a year under your blankie. Your mind is as weak as your jaw, & I’m going to move heaven & earth to come destroy them both. https://t.co/8oDubzNYr4

I think that last one is a knockout from Lynch. Great job, ladies. Keep it going.
